As a musician, Michael spent years studying Classical, American, African-American, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, and West African styles of drumming. As a student of movement, he immersed himself in the dances of Guinea, West Africa and Chinese Martial arts, specifically Shaolin Kung Fu, T'ai Chi, and Chi Kung. In addition, Michael has been studying the philosophy and history of the Lakota Native Americans and their customs.
Magbana Drum and Dance NYC is a group of fourteen talented percussionists and dancers with a large repertory of exciting West African pieces as well as works that combine Martial Arts, Modern dance, and World percussion. The sheer power of the drumming and the explosive energy of the dancers combined with tight arrangements, innovative choreography, original costumes, and racial diversity put Magbana in a class by itself.
Titled after the Guinean nickname for taxi, Magbana has audiences jumping out of their seats at a variety of venues from the east coast through the mid-west. The ensemble has performed a t places such as Midwest Drum & Dance Festival in Selma, IN, The American Museum of Natural History in NYC, The Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning in Jamaica, NY, The Kitchen in NYC, Ohio Teen Institute in Gambier, Ohio, and U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in NYC to name a few
